When starting a new business everyone has a piece of advice for you. The first thing they tell you to do is get business cards printed so you can start networking at every event possible. And of course, you need to TELL everyone about your new business, the lady that does your hair, people in line at the grocery store, everyone at the PTA meeting; you get the picture. Plus, don’t forget to ask all of your friends and family for referrals.
We can spend weeks if not months trying to find a client when we first start our spiritual business. We go to the networking events, telling everyone what we do, but we start to feel like we are tooting our own horn. We start to feel “salesy” and a bit uncomfortable each time we have to talk about ourselves. What happens when we get uncomfortable? We give up! That doesn’t work ver well for us, does it?
The way I see it, the above scenario creates a huge problem.
Since no one knows much about you or how transformational your services are, you are stuck having to convince them that you ARE incredible and they should really work with you. But then while you are convincing them how great you are, you begin to question yourself… “Am I really as amazing as I think I am? If I am that amazing, then why don’t have I more clients?” Those ugly little doubts begin to creep in and we wonder if we should be starting a business at all.
This is exactly how I felt when I started my business, DESPITE the fact that I had been part of a team that created a $165M company on Wall Street! Sounds silly, doesn’t it?
I knew there had to be a better way. It took me a while, but I finally figure it out…we have been doing it backwards all along.
You don’t have to stop networking and telling everyone how fantastic you are, but you simultaneously need to “SHOW” them your talents.
How? Solve a major problem for them for FREE. Yup, FREE. This is called your irresistible offer. Think of your irresistible offer is an energy exchange. You give your tribe an amazing piece of content that solves a problem for them and they give you their email address in return (yes, even if you have a store front and see people in person you MUST be collecting emails).
When you show your tribe that you understand them well enough to solve a problem for them, they will be hooked. Plus, when you use an irresistible offer to build your tribe you are creating authority, respect and trust.
You’ll never have to tell them again how great you are, because they will already know.
