The issue of low self-worth inevitably comes up for those on the spiritual path. Specifically, it is the deep sense of unworthiness we can feel at times which is our most glaring issue as we progress along the spiritual path. This is because it is through having a low self-evaluation that we do not feel we are worth putting in the commitment to apply spiritual practices and share our spiritual gifts in service of others. Our level of commitment to do our spiritual work is directly correlated to our sense of worth.
Low self-worth manifests in many forms and for those of us on the spiritual path, unworthiness typically shows up as…
- Feeling shy to admit to, or share our spiritual gifts with others
- Unable to comfortably accept a compliment or testimonial
- Apprehension around accepting money in exchange for spiritual services
- Sabotaging opportunities to share our gifts
- Procrastination in, or failure to apply spiritual practices
- Procrastination in working on a spiritual-based business
- Not completing spiritual programs
So, why do we feel unworthy of committing to our own spiritual development?
The answer is shared in the modern spiritual classic A Course in Miracles where it is taught that our unworthiness stems from our mistaken belief that we are separated from our loving and benign Source. Believing that we are separate from our Source, Who is pure love, leads to our feeling unworthy of love in all of its expressions. If we don’t feel worthy of love then we will not feel motivated to do the spiritual practices which will help us align with our loving Source.
As is further shared in A Course in Miracles: “The habit of engaging with God and His (Its) creations is easily made if you actively refuse to let your mind slip away. The problem is not one of concentration; it is the belief that no one, including yourself, is worth consistent effort.” T.pg.63-4
Understanding why we don’t feel motivated to apply spiritual practices or share our spiritual gifts is essential to moving forward with confidence on our spiritual path. From this new awareness, we can begin to repair our low self-worth.
A renewed sense of worthiness to commit to our spiritual practices and/or business will come from our acknowledgment that we are an integral part of our Source.
To help you heal the mistaken belief that you are disconnected from your Source, you can begin to attribute your spiritual gifts and the spiritual blessings you do have as stemming from your Source’s love for you. You could see this healing work as a deeper form of acceptance. Instead of dismissing your spiritual gifts and blessings, you can begin welcoming them through the loving perspective that you are indeed worthy of them purely because you are Spirit – an extension of your Source.
To rebuild your worthiness and feel motivated to do your spiritual work, you can…
- Take short but sincere moments where you close your eyes, lay aside your mental preoccupations, and connect with your Source through words, visualization, or feeling
- Remind yourself that your spiritual gift is a deeply meaningful and genuine expression of the Source’s love for you
- Do some spiritual-based work when you feel happy, excited, or peaceful
- Invite Spirit to be with you as you start your day and before you delve into your spiritual work
- Acknowledge consciously that you are one with your Source often throughout your day and especially before you go to sleep
The spiritual business you want to create and the spiritual healing practice you want to benefit from, have shown up in your experience with great purpose – to help you align with your truth and to help others do the same. You are worthy of everything because you are a fundamental part of the Source.
