Basement Feng Shui

Do you have a basement or cellar at your property?  Basements are often used as storerooms because the steep stairs do not provide ease of access and they are often full of damp, spiders, and webs, and this puts people off venturing down there too often. Maybe you have converted your basement into a laundry room, gym, or office.  These are a great use for basements and do not need a lot of activation.  But if your basement has been converted into a self-contained apartment which you plan to live in, then this needs to be looked at differently.  You may not know this, but occupied basements have their own feng shui rules.

As basements are below ground level, the energy of a basement is pressed down, so you need to find a way to lift that energy.  They do not have a lot of natural light, some do not have any windows at all to let in any natural light, so the next best thing is to use wall lights, up-lighting, lamps, and floor lamps to brighten the area as much as possible.  If you have a lovely big plant in the corner, place some fairy lights around it to light up that corner too.

Basements often have low ceilings, so to give the impression of higher ceilings it is advisable to paint the ceilings white as this gives the impression of expansion.

You can build the growth energy in your basement by adding small potted trees or plants.  The best area for the placement of these is in the south, the east, or the southeast sectors. With this placement, it makes these areas more active.  The plants can be living plants, artificial plants, or images of plants.  Another great way to uplift the energy is by adding murals of the sky or the sun.  You can add bright colours in the basement or images of brightly coloured birds.  Images of horses are also great at lifting the energy and you can also use mirrors to help the room expand.  Mirrors are great for helping the light to bounce around the room, and if you strategically place a mirror where it reflects your plants, it can look as though the mirror is a gateway to a garden.

You can also activate space by adding moving metal.  A great tool to use to do this is a pendulum clock or mobile or wind-chime.  A fan is also a great way to activate space by moving energy.

The area to be the most careful within a basement is the centre sector.  To find out where this area falls, using a floor plan draw a line diagonal from one corner of the floor plan to the other, then again from the opposite corners.  Where the lines cross in the centre is your centre sector.

The centre relates to our health, wealth, and relationships so you need to protect it.  Avoid placing large plants or trees in this centre area as this will drain the energy.  As mentioned, you can place this wonderful wood energy in the south, the east, or the southeast sector instead.  By standing in the centre sector while holding your compass, you can work out where these areas fall.

If you do live in the basement, try to keep it as clutter-free as possible.
