To Do or to Be: That Is the Question

Are you a creative? If you are, you know there is a special set of circumstances surrounding your gifts and ability. You feel as though you need to be in two places at the same time. You need to exude creative genius and also do all the mundane business stuff of being a “soul proprietor.”

So, how do you balance out both, especially when one of them (the creative genius) wants to take control all the time? Your creative genius can sometimes be like a wild beast you need to tame; other times it’s in hibernation – especially if you’re a writer.

And, then there’s the serious business side that needs to step up to the plate, as well. So many personalities, all at the same time – how do you balance them all? Here are a few tips on how to know when to do and when to simply be.

THE BALANCING ACT

Did you ever hear anyone say you are out of balance? What exactly does that mean? Being out of balance occurs when you have the feeling of overwhelm. When those feelings occur, it’s time to shine a spotlight on what isn’t working.

Ask yourself a few important questions:

  • Tell the truth, have you taken on too much?
  • Do you need to delegate more?
  • How about asking for help?

There are times in your life when you’re out of balance; life throws you an unexpected curve, work projects go awry, and life events get in the way with daily routines and you have to accommodate those. During these times, you need to wait until the major event passes and life resumes to normal.

Other times, however, you need to take a look and allow the creative genius in you to take center stage. How can you recreate overwhelm into being empowered? Ask yourself the questions above and you can gain some clear insights as you recreate what is not working for you in the moment.

INDECISION

Have you ever heard advice to just trust your intuition or to go with your gut? Of course, you have. Sometimes though, your gut is controlled by your mind. Something may not feel right because your mind is being fearful. The result is an awful feeling in your gut.

Maybe you are afraid of leaving your comfort zone, and there’s no real valid reason not to proceed. Sometimes, trusting your gut will keep you safe instead of taking a chance. You don’t know the answer, and it’s okay not to always have the answer right away.

Step away, take a breather, leave it on a shelf for a day or two. When you revisit something, it’s amazing how much clarity you can get by simply being who you are. You will almost always gain a fresh perspective on an old problem this way. Sometimes, it’s simply necessary to just be.

BE WHAT YOU WANT TO BE

If you’re like me, there’s always that one chore you detest; mine is filing. I’d rather go to the dentist than tackle my business paperwork and filing. However, when I take on the personality of a person who is organized and efficient, something shifts.

It’s like play-acting. I get to pretend who I want to be each day. Maybe today I’ll be the mad creative genius and sometime next week I’ll be the empowered female leader (who has completed all her filing!). Whatever you need to be or whomever you need to be, remember to be what you want to see.

Show up as who you truly are, but create new realms of potential for the person you are striving to create. There are times to do and then there are times to simply just be.
