We spend time placing feng shui activations and cures in our home but if you have children, do you pay their bedrooms the same attention? The purpose of feng shui in a child’s bedroom is to support a happy environment, which encourages good relationships, respect, and good health.
When my three children were young, I was frequently decluttering their bedrooms of toys and changing the layout. It felt so good when it was all finished and it was clean, neat, and tidy, although they did not stay like that for very long. You cannot beat the joyous feeling you have when you have completed a task like this.
Here are some tips you may find useful when you are designing or rearranging your child’s bedrooms.
Bed Placement
As children’s bedrooms are normally much smaller than adult’s bedrooms, there can often be minimal options for bed placement. There is no such thing as the perfect home layout, we must make the most of what we have available to us.
- Try to ensure your child can see the door from their bed, so they can see who is entering the room.
- If possible, try not to place the bed in direct line of the door.
- Try to avoid having the bed directly under a window. If you cannot avoid this, use a tall headboard for support or hang blackout curtains here.
- If your child’s bedroom is next to a bathroom, try not to place the bed up against the bedroom/bathroom wall. Especially where there is a toilet or drain on the other side of the wall, as this can drain their energy.
- If you have the space, try to place each child in their own bedroom.
Desk Space
Having a dedicated space for your child to study demonstrates to them that you feel the importance of education. This also helps them to focus.
Certificates and Accomplishments
Your child’s certificates and accomplishments should be displayed on the south wall of their bedroom as this is the fame area. Doing so shows that you are proud of your child. You can display things like drawings, paintings, crafts, trophies, and medals. Test results or letters of special recognition from their school/teachers praising exceptional effort and good behaviour are also ideal to display here.
Bedroom Location
- The best bedroom location for your son would be a bedroom in the north or east sector.
- The best bedroom location for your daughter would be in the south, southeast or west sector of your home.
Clear the Clutter
Clear out the clutter and give away toys that have not been played with in a long while. This will make valuable space in the bedroom. Ensure under the bed is clear as you do not want your child sleeping over clutter, you want them to have a clear mind to concentrate. A clutter-free bedroom helps your child to be more creative and less pressured.
Recommended Bedroom Colors
Dark bedroom colors can be depressing for children, so ensure the colors are bright. Yellows, light greens, pinks, or light blues are perfect colors for your child’s bedroom.
Things to Avoid
Do not place aquariums in your child’s bedroom. The ‘no water’ in a bedroom rule is for any bedroom, not just a child’s bedroom. Always avoid displaying photographs or images of dangerous vicious animals. A child’s bedroom should be a tranquil place where they feel safe, so instead display happy images that bring your child joy and make them feel happy and secure.
