What’s your abundance mindset?

What is an abundant mindset? It is different for everyone.

In a nutshell, an abundant mindset is the one that lets you see the potential for you in everything.

Not the potential you see in others or that others see for you, but what you see for you.

This is one area that I find so many people get stuck in their mindset. Deciphering what is their belief or ideal from others.

Your mindset is simply your belief about a specific topic. You have mindsets about all kinds of things, from traffic to food to people to your desires. A belief is a thought you keep thinking. If you don’t check in with your thoughts and you just let them run wild, your beliefs and mindset can often be all over the place and jumbled, leaving you unsure about what is yours and what isn’t. Part of the work I do with my clients is to have them check in with their beliefs and keep what’s serving them and let go of what isn’t. It’s not surprising that after they do this, their mindset around all types of things shifts.

As I said we have mindsets about all kinds of things. Our beliefs come from our upbringing, our experiences, thoughts we have about things and much more. We often create a belief around something from a single experience. We may never give it any thought again or we may overthink it adding layer upon layer onto it. Some of these beliefs serve us well for a short time and some for a long time. Either way we often put little effort into creating our beliefs and mindset, especially those that don’t serve us. In a minute we make a judgement about an experience and then often allow ourselves to live from that experience forever more.

Shifting our mindset about our experience requires our attention and time. I call this rewriting the energy patterns. It’s like playing a certain song on repeat, until you consciously choose to change it, it will just play over and over again. We all run some lack mindset and some abundance mindset. I bet just reading that made one of them pop up in your head. Most likely a lack mindset example. Unfortunately, most of us have been programmed towards a lack mindset instead of an abundance mindset. Have you ever been told to look at all the possibilities? Be prepared for the worst?  Under promise, over deliver? Our language is filled with phrases and prompts that set us up to expect less than. Don’t get me wrong, there are some times these notions serve us, but only after we have cultivated an abundance mindset, not as a go to lack mindset.

Abundance mindset is a general mindset. It tells you that everything is always working out for you and you can have, do or be anything you’d like. You can keep it general or take it more specific. (Ooops, did your lack mindset jump in and laugh there. That’s ok, mine still does sometimes too.) Each moment is a new opportunity to shift your beliefs and rewrite your energy to create an abundant mindset. Change happens in each moment, not all at once. Each time you catch yourself in a lack mindset, use it to shift your perspective to a more abundant one.

When I was little I was hit by a motorcycle that catapulted me into a ditch. Yes, I flew through the air.  Fortunately, I was only bruised and scraped up. Lack mindset would tell me all motorcycles are dangerous. Limiting me from going on them, and it did. Yes it kept me safe to a degree, but it also created a mindset that prevented me from having a new safe experience. Then my mom met my step dad who rode a motorcycle and wanted to take me on it all the time. Slowly, I shifted my belief about motorcycles. Some of my best memories of my dad are of our time on his motorcycle. I didn’t consciously create that belief, but I consciously stuck to it. Fear is a lack mindset. Fear serves us at times to give us a perspective on things. Not to live in.

Love is an abundant mindset. Love tells us we are safe, taken care of and unlimited. Fear and love exist alongside each other. I like to think of fear as the springboard back into love. I believe we are meant to live in love and vacation in fear. Fear takes many forms we don’t recognize. And for that reason we think it is offering us safety when really it is limiting us. If you have been based in fear and lack for sometime it may feel uncomfortable for you to think that. Healthy fear allows us to seek other ways, unhealthy fear asks us to stay put and not do anything.

Where in your life is your mindset set in lack and fear and where is it set in love and abundance?

Take some time today to think about this. And pick one are where you can consciously start shifting your mindset from lack into abundance.
